St. Stephen School Library Information Centre
The mission statement of the St. Stephen School Library Information Centre is to support classroom teachers in their endeavour to implement the Ontario Curriculum, to promote a love of literature in all its forms, and to provide our students and teachers with equitable and open access to information. Our Library will be a welcoming and stimulating learning environment where students are enabled to become independent, lifelong learners.

Library Technicians assist in the organization and maintenance of the school’s collection of library materials using a specialized knowledge of library systems and methods to ensure an effective and efficient library operation for the use of students and staff.
Information Literacy
Information Literacy is the key to helping students use learning throughout their lives as a way to solve problems, act ethically, plan for the future and prepare for change.
Information Technology
Information technology is the study or application of systems. Students use information technology to relate prior knowledge, locate information, synthesize findings, formulate conclusions and transfer knowledge and skills.
@ your Library
We have a wonderful and varied selection of books which interest readers of all ages.
All materials in the library are organized into different sections. Each book in the library has a call number which is printed on a spine label and placed on the spine of a book. The call number provides information about where the book can be located in the library.
We also have a small collection of French Language books.
Please note that all books written and or illustrated by Canadian authors or illustrators are recognized by the red maple leaf sticker on the spine of the book.
Picture Books
Picture Books can be shared by children and adults of all ages. They can be read individually or as a read aloud. An E label on the top section of the spine indicates that the book is a picture book. They are located in the Picture Book section of the library. These books are shelved in alphabetical order according to the author's last name.
Example: The Very Hungry Caterpillar written by Eric Carle has the following call number:

Primary Chapter Books
We have placed simple beginning chapter books in the Primary Chapter Books section of the library. There is a blue PR label on the top of spine of the book.
Fiction Section
The letter F on the spine of a book indicates that the novel is fiction. We have both hard cover and paperback novels in the library. These works of fiction may include adventure, fantasy or mystery. They may take place in a real setting and include some historical figures.
Fiction books are arranged by alphabetical order according to the author's last name.
Example: Run by Eric Walters has the following call number:

Non-Fiction Section
Non-fiction books are books that contain true information or facts. They are organized by Dewey Decimal System. It is a system used to classify and shelve books in the library according to 10 basic categories.

Reference Materials Section
We have a variety of reference materials which students can use in the library. These materials remain in the library so that they can be used by everyone during the school day.
Reference Materials include:

Magazines and Newspapers
We have a variety of magazines available to students. Our magazine collection includes:
Chickadee
National Geographic for Kids
Owl
Sports Illustrated for Kids
We subscribe to the Toronto Star newspaper for students.
Graphic Novels
A graphic novel is a long comic book. We have a variety of graphic novels that would appeal to both boys and girls.
Picture Books for Older Students
Picture books have become much more sophisticated. Picture books for older students may contain young adult content and underlying messages that are understood by older students. They are identifed by the POS on the top part of the spine.
